Tegel Kunci started as an art form of their own. From design and color to production and installation, they form patterns and combination that enhance the aesthetic of space. Before mass production made them widely available, tiles were created to suit their owner’s unique style and taste. Long prized for their durability, cement tiles have become objects of aesthetic desire from their natural greenish grey color to the endless possibilities of dramatic hues and continued innovation of patterns, shapes and textures. It is a beautiful piece of history we can all carry with us today.

Tegel Kunci’s hand-made tiles offer practically unlimited customization potential, making it a favorite among architects, interior designers, and artists. Since being featured in numerous public places throughout Asia — old and new, traditional and modern, classic and contemporary — Pabrik Tegel Kunci is also preferred by numerous publications, including Architecture & Interior Design Indonesia magazine.

Over the years, Pabrik Tegel Kunci has been recognized for continuous innovation coupled with commitment to tradition.

After the independence of Indonesia, largely between 1973-1997 the cement tile industry was slowly eclipsed as ceramics became cheaper and faster to produce. Almost extinct, PT. Matta Indonesia took over & revived Tegel Kunci in 1997. PT Matta Indonesia educated the market about the artistic value behind the tile making process, not only rescuing Tegel Kunci, but also reviving the nearly extinct cement tile industry in Indonesia.
